FRANCON’s ‘Scene’ retail installation stands as a testament to the brand’s dedication to quality and an unconventional approach to fashion. The team detaches its development process from traditional fashion industry timelines, producing limited-edition pieces that focus on settings rather than seasons. Their designs resonate with distinct occasions and moods. New items are introduced on the team’s schedule, creating a continuous body of work. Production takes place in small family-owned factories and ateliers in Italy, Poland and The Netherlands.
An impressive light installation by artist Arnout Meijer adorns ‘Scene.’ The temporary, site-specific light artwork, ‘Second Sun,’ bathes ‘Scene’ in the deep ,warm glow of the sunset. This dynamic installation mimics the slow but grand transformation of the sky during twilight. In the dark days of December, the light can create an intriguing effect, as the sun seems to set in an unconventional direction. At night, the light engenders a powerful image that varies with each visit to the Lobby.

Cultural centre Het Nieuwe Instituut is rethinking the archetypal museum shop with a pop-up at Dutch Design Week, designed to encourage more ethical, resource-conscious consumption.
Diners were asked to provide their own illumination as the sun goes down, in a bid to make them aware of our overconsumption of energy and the adverse effects our light pollution has on the natural rhythms of other animals.
For this purpose, Meijer designed two wall-mounted fixtures inside the New Store that have no internal light source and are simply composed of discarded glass shards topped with wooden shelves made from old beams.
If they require more light, guests have to place their phone on this ledge with the flashlight on, funnelling light onto the glass shard through a narrow slit in the wood.
This reflects and refracts light around the space while revealing various crescent moon shapes engraved into the glass in a nod to the circadian rhythm.
“It’s really about our dependence on the constant supply of energy,” Troeman said. “Can we embrace the dark and hence be more environmentally friendly? It has benefits for everyone and everything.”
21 October 2023 – 29 October 2023
Through Black Marble, the New Store questions your relationship with the energy you use. Are you happy in the dark? Is it cosy? Or do you prefer light? If so, are you prepared to contribute light to Residency for the People, using your own energy supply?
Black Marble imagines a future where we, as consumers, have to contribute our own energy sources if we want more light. But how much light do we really need when darkness has its own special qualities? Darkness creates a cosy atmosphere, prepares people for sleep, does not disturb animals and consumes no energy. These are natural qualities that can benefit humans and more-than-humans alike.
The two light installations of Black Marble illuminate the space while giving darkness visibility. The intensity is not static, but is dynamically controlled through gradual dimming and the use of visitors’ light sources. As a result, less energy and materials are used. “Engravings referencing the moon, a symbol of an unspoilt landscape, have been set into discarded glass shards that are hold by sanded old beams.” In one installation, the engraving is illuminated by discarded electronics; in another, the flashlight function of visitors’ smartphones is used.
The human eye automatically adjusts to light and dark, so slow changes are not immediately noticeable, but it also becomes clear that we do not need so much light. “The light installations are functional, but at the same time they point to over-consumption and light pollution.”
Designer Arnout Meijer sees darkness not as a lack of light, but as a quality in itself. Darkness is necessary for human biorhythms, creates a cosy atmosphere and provides tranquillity. For many creatures, including bats, moths, foxes and deer, a dark night is essential. Light pollution can disrupt (animal) behaviour and entire ecosystems.
The title of the installation, Black Marble, plays on the “Blue Marble” nickname given to Earth after the now-famous image of our planet was taken on 7 December 1972 by the crew of Apollo 17, from some 29,000 kilometres away. Illuminated by the sun, the Earth indeed appeared as a blue sphere; however, its other side, in darkness, was black.

In collaboration with UNStudio, ABT and SI-X, Arnout Meijer Studio created a permanent light installation at the 18 Septemberplein in Eindhoven. In four glass boxes, that suspend on the facade of the building, holographic light creates an interactive experience that relates to the movement of the sun throughout the year.
Frans Hals plays the starring role in the Frans Hals Museum’s permanent collection. It could hardly be otherwise. But this role is extremely varied. Hals will feature in this experimental collection exhibition in many ways.
To celebrate the opening of the new-look museum the meeting between original and imaginary paintings by Frans Hals and interpretations by art experts and artists are the central themes in Hof and Hal. A choir of different voices will resound throughout the exhibition: painters and photographers, curators and art historians will respond in individual and subjective ways to the paintings by the Haarlem virtuoso.
Contemporary artists like Anton Henning, Jasper Hagenaar, Shezad Dawood and Nina Katchadourian will use various paintings by Hals as starting points for new work. Rendezvous with Frans Hals will show how well Frans Hals’s civic guard paintings and portraits translate to the present.
The exhibition has been made possible by the Van Toorn Scholten Foundation and Mondriaan Fund.
